Clackmannanshire Council held a special meeting yesterday to provide a formal opportunity to discuss the need to balance the budget for 2010/11. The meeting was also used to present initial savings proposals and to set the date of the budget meeting as 11 February 2010. This was necessary, given the extremely tight timescales officers are aiming for to present a balanced budget.
The Council has already made considerable advances in identifying ways to close the budget gap. A full package of measures is being worked upon at present and will be presented to Council in February, when elected members will take decisions on the specific actions necessary to approve a balanced budget.
Chief Executive Angela Leitch said, " While our budget position is challenging, I am confident that we will be able to present a balanced budget in February. The shortfall is something that we would always have had to face although we are now having to put savings in place over a shorter time period than I would have liked.
"I would also like to reassure residents that in the main it will be business as usual going forward. We have a dedicated team of senior managers, ably supported by our accountants, who are united in presenting solutions that will see essential services continue to be effectively provided."
