Pupils at Banchory Primary School have created a special plaque made of clay as part of the celebrations to mark the school's 50th anniversary.

The pupils were members of the Junior Challenge Group, which is an award programme run by Clackmannanshire Council's Community Learning and Development department.

The group came up with the idea to create a plaque that could be displayed in the school permanently.

The Junior Challenge group worked with Community Learning and Development Officer Alison Young and Aberdona Gallery potter John Maguire on the project. The young people planned the project from the beginning, sketching and painting ideas that they thought should be included. They learned new skills each week as they worked with the clay. This ranged from creating the clay base, collecting flowers and leaves that were then pressed on to the background, painting certain parts of the sign and then etching around each of their hands on to the sign. The hands were painted in bright colours and the group thought this was an excellent way to represent who had created the celebratory sign for the school.

The sign was unveiled at Banchory Primary's end of term assembly to delighted pupils, staff and parents, where Headteacher John Harley announced it would be hung in the entrance to the school. The Junior Challenge members were thrilled with everyone's reaction to their hard work and as some move on to Lornshill in the new term, the news that the sign would be displayed for all to see for years to come was extremely rewarding.
