Walk to Work Week takes place across the UK between 27th April and 1st May 2009.
With an estimated 70% of adults not doing enough exercise to benefit their health, Walk to Work Week aims to raise awareness of the benefits of walking and encouraging the nation to fit more of it into their everyday lives.
If you live within walking distance of work, why not support Walk to Work Week and walk from home to work, instead of driving or taking public transport? Your finances and health will both benefit from taking such a step.
Clackmannanshire has a comprehensive network of rights of way and other paths, as well as roadside footways, all which may be used on your walk to work. Details of the rights of way and other paths can be found on ClacksWeb, the Council's website, at www.clacksweb.org.uk/environment/pathmap/
Government statistics show that we jump in the car for over a fifth of journeys shorter than one mile. Clackmannanshire Council has organised two lunchtime walks for staff to take part in to promote Walk to Work Week.
The first walk on Tuesday 28th April is going from Kilncraigs to the Black Devon Wetland, returning via Clackmannan Backwood and the second walk on Thursday 30th April is around Gartmorn Dam.
Councillor Eddie Carrick, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability, will be taking part in the walk on 28th April. You are invited to send a photographer to Kilncraigs at 12.20pm on 28th April before the walkers set off.
Councillor Carrick said: "Incorporating walking into our daily journeys bring great benefits for individuals and for Clackmannanshire as a whole. Walking all or part of your commute is an excellent way to get some activity into your day, doing wonders for both your mental and physical health. Even if it's not practical to walk the whole way, by getting off the bus earlier we can all walk more in our daily lives and reap the benefits."
