It appears that the sun has come out just in time for local gardeners to make the finishing touches to their gardens.

Green fingered locals are anxiously anticipating Wednesday 6th August when the Council's 33rd annual Garden Competition enters the final round of judging.

A total of 81 people entered this year's competition with strong entries in the Alloa, Menstrie and Alva Floral categories. There is also a welcome increased interest in the Newcomer and Council Tenant categories. The preliminary judging shows there is great enthusiasm and interest from both newcomers and regular supporters of the competition. Everybody has made a great effort and shown a love of gardening and flare for trying new things. With the standard so high, the final judges will have their work cut out to select the best gardens.

The competition recognises achievement in the areas of Biodiversity, Best Council Tenant, Commercial Premises, Floral, Vegetable, Allotment, Floral Containers and Best Newcomer.

The lucky winners will receive a range of vouchers to spend in garden centres.

All categories are judged on:

  • the general appearance and layout of the garden
  • the utilisation of the plant material within the garden
  • the standard of cultivation and maintenance of the garden

This year's judges include David Crighton from Stirling Council. David has over 25 years of horticultural experience within local authorities, from his apprenticeship through to his current post of Streetscape Team Leader. During this time he has gained invaluable experience on a variety of horticultural skills including propagation of nursery stock, maintenance of sports pitches, management and maintenance of trees and shrubs and much more. David's own interests are the diversity of plants and good design.

He will be joined by Provost Derek Stewart, Allan Gall and Kathy Knox from Clackmannanshire Council. They will be looking for bright, colourful displays using original ideas and design.

You are invited to send a photographer to Kilncraigs at 9am on Wednesday 6th August where the judging party will gather before heading off to view the gardens.
