Independence Day

Leaving home and striking out on your own is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Some young people may decide to leave home because they think that it will be exciting. The reality can be very different. You may have no choice but to leave home and it may not be a positive experience.

It is best to take your time, plan carefully and only move out when it is right for you. A free event has been organised by the Council in partnership with Ochilview Housing, Paragon Housing and the NCH Path project to help your move go as smoothly as possible.

The Independence Event is aimed at 16 to 25 year olds who are about to leave home and will take place at Alloa Town Hall on Thursday 3rd July from noon to 4pm.

Event organiser Mary Fox, Community Learning and Development Team Leader, said: "Leaving home is a fact of life and most young people fly the nest before they're 25. But it can be a bitter sweet experience - while you might have your freedom and the chance to have parties whenever you want, you now have to look after yourself and your money and that can be scary."

Information and workshops will be available on the day on topics including:

  • what housing is available locally
  • local college courses
  • training opportunities
  • leisure activities
  • saving energy and fuel costs
  • benefits advice
  • money advice and budgeting
  • healthy eating
  • recycling
  • parenting

Representatives of Paragon and Ochil View Housing Associations will be present to explain how to apply for a new home, as well as officers from the Council's housing service who will be able to explain the local authority's housing allocations policy and waiting list.

Forth Valley College, Homestart, Young Scot, the Volunteers Centre, NCH Path Project, the Orchard, Street Sport, Credit Unit, the Careers Service and Hillfoots Family Centre will also be represented.

Mary added: "I'd advise all young people to drop in. It will be a great chance to learn some useful life skills, like how to turn your new place into a 'fab pad' with second hand furniture from online recycling network freecycle."
