Scotland took a zero tolerance approach to littering on Tuesday 3rd June 2008.

Keep Scotland Beautiful joined forces with local authorities to carry out awareness raising activities across the country.

In Clackmannanshire, Council staff teamed up with officers from Central Scotland Police to raise awareness that littering is against the law and that you can be fined for not disposing of your litter correctly.

Clackmannanshire's Community Wardens focussed on litter hotspots on the day of action and their presence along with that of uniformed police officers generated positive behaviour.

Councillor Eddie Carrick, Sustainability Portfolio Holder, said: ""NO buts!, NO excuses!, NO litter! The Council, and our partners, will continue to take action to keep Clackmannanshire's environment clean and safe for all the responsible people who appreciate what it contributes to this community."

Keep Scotland Beautiful Chief Executive John Summers OBE, said, "The day of action has demonstrated that Scottish local authorities and police forces are committed to tackling littering. By working in partnership a stand has been taken against low level crimes, such as littering, demonstrating that it will no longer be taken lightly. It is clear that littering is still a big problem but by continuing to educate people, provide better services and issue fines we are united in our approach to make our communities safer, stronger, greener and cleaner."

High visibility patrols were held throughout the day at a number of litter hotspots - these included in the vicinity of fast food premises, in car parks and around the county's three high schools.

Councillor Carrick added: "The issue of littering, in addition to other forms of anti-social behaviour, is often raised by concerned residents. But I would stress that this is not merely a problem caused by young people. Adults eating at fast food premises and smokers outside licensed premises are frequently as guilty as the younger section of the community of causing this blight on our beautiful county."
