Alloa Family Centre has won an energy saving competition held by Clackmannanshire Council's Property Services. The competition was open to all Clackmannanshire educational centres, whose gas and electricity usage was measured against the previous year's.
The first prize of £1,500 was won by the Alloa Family Centre who managed to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 17%. Second place went to Menstrie Primary School who reduced their emissions by 13% and received £1,000. Third place went to Claremont Primary School, achieving a 9% reduction and picking up £500.
All other schools who managed to reduce their emissions received £100. 14 of our schools managed to reduce their energy consumption with a combined saving of over 64 tonnes of CO2. The prizes were funded by the Council's energy efficiency fund.
Pupils made posters and stickers to encourage everyone to turn off lights and IT equipment when not in use. Some schools enlisted Energy Champions to ensure awareness was continually on the agenda. The Eco Schools programme energy section was also used by some sites to find out what could be done to improve the schools' performance. This information was then passed back to Property Services for consideration of future projects.
This and similar activities show the Council's commitment towards reducing its emissions in line with the Climate Change Declaration and its targets in the Local Authorities Carbon Management Programme.
