First year pupils from Alloa Academy will face a day of team building and problem solving challenges next week when they take part in Operation Africa.

A total of 150 pupils will take part in the event at Gartmorn Dam on Friday 30th May.

The entire year group will spend the day working on a number of challenges which have been designed to highlight the difficult experiences refugees in Africa can face on a day-to-day basis. These include building shelters, moving water and making stretchers. And to make matters even more demanding, the solutions will involve challenges such as code breaking, orienteering and instructions in a foreign language.

Some pupils will also be acting as news correspondents producing a report on the challenges faced on the day.

This event has been organised by Alloa Academy and Enterprise in Education in partnership with the Army and the Countryside Rangers who will provide activities on the day. Local firm Marshall Construction has kindly donated materials.

Roger McAdoo, pupil support teacher at Alloa Academy and co-ordinator of the event said: "This promises to be a very exciting and thought provoking day for all our pupils. This type of event is a fantastic opportunity to bring the curriculum alive and make learning real."

This cross curricular event also links Curriculum for Excellence with the Scottish Government's National Determined to Succeed strategy encouraging pupils to have a 'can-do, will-do' attitude to life and to become responsible citizens.

You are invited to send a reporter and/or photographer to the event. They will be welcome to attend at Gartmorn Dam visitor centre at 10.30am, 11.30am or 1.30pm when they will be accompanied by a member of staff and shown around the various activities.
