Local walkers and cyclists may have noticed the ongoing improvements to the cycle route in the Cambus area which have taken place over the last few months. This route is part of the National Cycle Network linking Clackmannanshire to Fife and Stirling and is part of the 'Round the Forth' cycle route.
Two miles of the route has now been re-surfaced from Smithfield Loan, Alloa, to Cambus. The first section of the route from Cambus westwards towards the Old Tullibody Bridge, has also been surfaced.
While the route currently stops just before the railway line, Clackmannanshire Council, with the help of sustainable transport charity SUSTRANS, has raised sufficient funding to complete this section through to the Manor Powis roundabout - completing a missing link in the National Cycle Network. The Council is currently in discussion with the owners of the land to the west of Cambus to finalise the line of the cycle route.
Alan Murray, Team Leader Traffic and Transportation said: "In the short time since the Cambus to Alloa section was re-opened I have witnessed a huge increase in people walking and cycling. And when the cycle route is connected through to the former road to Stirling I expect to see the even more people taking the opportunity to walk and cycle along the river and enjoying the fantastic scenery and landmarks along the way."
As well as spectacular views of the Ochils, the new section of the cycle route will take in Old Tullibody Bridge, which is the oldest structure in Clackmannanshire, the old Dovecot and Cambus Iron Bridge, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Access to the cycle route from Tullibody will be made much easier once the Toucan crossing at Station Road is in operation.
