The Council has invested in the refurbishment of blocks of flats in Backwood, Clackmannan and Lochbrae, Sauchie. The flats, some of which provide a temporary place to stay for homeless people before they are found permanent homes, have been modernised and redecorated to provide safe and suitable accommodation.
The programme of modernisation was part-funded by a £568,000 grant from the Scottish Government specifically allocated to tackling homelessness. The total refurbishment cost around £900,000 and has enabled the Council to upgrade facilities and enhance the regeneration of both areas.
The outside of the Lochbrae block has been upgraded with disabled access and the facade will be rendered. Landscaping is planned over the next few months. Inside, the flats have received new white goods, carpets and furnishings and have internal phones that connect to a 24 hour concierge for security. There are eight flats, one designed for disabled access.
Councillor Sam Ovens, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: The refurbishment at Lochbrae will benefit vulnerable people at a difficult time by providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment. This comes on top of the refurbishment of two other blocks in the Craigview area. The surrounding community will also benefit from having smart, well-kept flats and communal areas near by.
Five years ago the Council identified over 300 houses recommended for demolition but our new policy of refurbishment is bringing these buildings back into circulation, providing more than 300 more affordable homes.
There will be a photo opportunity on Friday 2 May at 2pm at Lochbrae, Sauchie, when Cllr Ovens will be in attendance and there will be opportunities to view the flats, see the concierge area and ask questions.
