Community Council Elections

Published on:

April 2008

The Community Council election process is set to get underway in May with a call to residents in Alloa's Bowmar, Sauchie, Fishcross, Coalsnaughton & Devonside to form community councils.

And all that's needed is 20 signatures from each community before 15th May and the election wheels will be set in motion.

Then it's on to the second stage of the process of inviting nominations and electing Community Council members right across Clackmannanshire. There are vacancies in all areas across the county, and the nomination process is simple - just fill out the form and get two people to support you. Anyone who is over the age of 16 and who appears on our electoral roll can stand.

Provost Derek Stewart said: "Community Councils play an important part in developing links between the local authority and community areas. They have the ability to comment on planning issues, licensing matters, and are regularly consulted on a range of issues, some of which may be controversial.

"Members need no particular qualifications or background experience - everyone has the ability to make a contribution, and support is available. Although the election process is starting now, new members will not need to take up their role until the autumn. Bowmar, Sauchie and Fishcross, Coalsnaughton & Devonside are the only areas in Clackmannanshire which do not currently have a Community Council so I would ask residents in these areas to consider getting involved."

Our election process is designed to encourage more local people to stand for election. The elections are now carried out in two stages meaning that community councils now have two chances to fill their vacancies. Elections are held every two years.
