Unsafe gas heating systems

Following complaints from the public Clackmannanshire Council Trading Standards Service and the Health and Safety Executive today expressed concern that a local trader may have been installing gas central heating systems, carrying out repairs and issuing gas safety certificates despite not being CORGI registered.

It is a legal requirement that a trader must be competent to carry out gas work and registered with CORGI in order to install or repair gas fittings or appliances.

Brian Wilson, a Clackmannanshire Council Trading Standards Officer said "It is easy for a member of the public to check whether or not somebody is CORGI registered all you need to do is telephone CORGI on 0800 915 0485 or visit www.corgi-gas-safety.com. Students and other residents in rented accommodation should ask to see a copy of their landlords current gas safety certificate and check that the person who completed it is CORGI registered. Quite apart from it being an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act to claim to be CORGI registered if in fact you are not, if a person carries out gas work and is not registered then your system may be unsafe, potentially lethally. Plus you may find that should there be an accident or a fire that your insurance company may not pay out."

If you are looking for a CORGI registered gas fitter to either carry out work or carry out a service then you can visit the CORGI website and enter your postcode for details of local traders.

Anyone who finds that a trader has done work for them who is not CORGI registered is asked to contact Trading Standards on 0845 2 777 000 or by email on tradingstandards@stirling.gov.uk or visit Trading Standards in the Municipal Buildings, 8-10 Corn Exchange Road, Stirling, FK9 5SQ.
