Coping with Clouds of Hazardous Materials or an Air Crash

Cloud of hazardous material

  • Go indoors, stay there and tune into Cental FM (103.1 FM).
  • Close all doors and windows, shut down all ventilation and air conditioning systems and block obvious draughts. REMEMBER to unblock these vents before switching everything back on.
  • Extinguish all flames - for example, pilot lights.
  • Get out your home emergency pack.
  • Cover or put all food in a closed, sealed cupboard or container.
  • Wash and/or peel all fruit and vegetables before eating.
  • DO NOT use food that is leafy or difficult to wash.
  • DO NOT try to collect your children from school unless told to do so. They will be looked after properly by the school.
  • DO NOT go outside until you are told to do so. (With some chemicals everything may appear quite normal and you won’t be able to see or smell them).
  • DO NOT USE RAINWATER.
  • DO NOT pet animals that have been outside.
Listen for public announcements, they will inform you when you can go outside and of other actions you should take.

Air Crash

A burning aircraft can release dangerous substances, so if outside you must:

  • keep upwind
  • stay well clear
  • inform the police if you are a witness.
