Coping with Clouds of Hazardous Materials or an Air Crash
Cloud of hazardous material
- Go indoors, stay there and tune into Cental FM (103.1 FM).
- Close all doors and windows, shut down all ventilation and air conditioning systems and block obvious draughts. REMEMBER to unblock these vents before switching everything back on.
- Extinguish all flames - for example, pilot lights.
- Get out your home emergency pack.
- Cover or put all food in a closed, sealed cupboard or container.
- Wash and/or peel all fruit and vegetables before eating.
- DO NOT use food that is leafy or difficult to wash.
- DO NOT try to collect your children from school unless told to do so. They will be looked after properly by the school.
- DO NOT go outside until you are told to do so. (With some chemicals everything may appear quite normal and you won’t be able to see or smell them).
- DO NOT USE RAINWATER.
- DO NOT pet animals that have been outside.
Listen for public announcements, they will inform you when you can go outside and of other actions you should take.
Air Crash
A burning aircraft can release dangerous substances, so if outside you must:
- keep upwind
- stay well clear
- inform the police if you are a witness.
